Frequently Asked Questions
The two primary distinctions are (a) the type of relationship between client and coach/therapist and (b) presence/absence of regulated practices.
When working with a psychotherapist, you are participating in the regulated practice of psychotherapy informed by specific ethical guidelines and standards. To read more about the regulation of psychotherapy in Ontario, check out the CRPO or ask your therapist if you have questions. Many insurance companies offer coverage for psychotherapy services.
With coaching at Mud Creek Co., the nature of the relationship between client and coach is more interactive and less restricted in terms of dual relationships. Coaching needs are matched to the client and may span from habit building to sports performance, stress management to injury recovery. As a coach who is also a psychotherapist, clients benefit from the education and inclusion of mental health coaching and consideration for habit building, program design and personalization, and (elective) homework.
"Coaching" is an unregulated/unprotected practice; for e.g. habit coach, relationship coach, business coach, career coach, dating coach. As such, it is not covered by insurance.
That said, at Mud Creek Co., we apply the ethical standards held up to protect therapy clients (e.g. confidentiality, informed consent, evidence-based approaches, centering client well-being) to all of our offerings.
